"Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?"
And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

Q#1. What does it mean when someone says, “This world has nothing for me”?

“This world has nothing for me” is a popular saying among some Christians today. It became popular in the praise song “Rescue” by New Song. In between the Chorus and the verse is the line, “I will follow you, this world has nothing for me.” As a lot of Christian phrases and lingo are, this line can be confusing especially to those who are outside the Christian faith or new to Jesus.

What do you mean this world has nothing for you? Just look at all it has! Cars, money, fame, big houses, cool clothes…iPods!!!! There are beaches, islands, coral reefs, mountains, rivers and all kind of cool stuff to do in this world. Are Christians saying that these things are nothing, that the world isn’t fun, that there is nothing on this big planet that matters?

Yes, these are all nice things and they do matter, but what do they really matter in the long run. What people are trying to say when they use this phrase, is that in the long run, they know that a relationship with Jesus is all that matters. It is a hard concept for people understand and grasp, even if you are the one who is saying it. It has a lot of weight and not just a phrase that should be thrown around.

Here is the easy explanation: The Gospel

Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

No matter who we are we have all sinned, or done wrong and cannot compare to the perfection of God.

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Because of our sin we have earned death. Death in this instance means that we are separated from God who is the giver of life. To be separated from God is to be in Hell.

Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Jesus is the only one who can save you from this separation from God and Hell.

So, when people say, “This world has nothing for me.” They are saying that there is nothing in this world that can save them from separation from God. There is nothing that can be done other than trusting Jesus that can save you from Hell. No amount of money or fame or the size of your house or the amount of people you help or even how good a person you are can get you to Heaven. A better way of saying, “This world has nothing for me” might be, “This world has no way of saving me, making me perfect in the eyes of God and keeping me in a relationship with Jesus.”

John 14:6

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
